Did you know that according to a study conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics, housewives have a 55% greater risk of developing cancer than a woman who is employed?
Yeah...I had the same reaction you all probably did when I heard this.
So why is this? Because every single bright blue fresh ocean fresh smelling cleaning product you use has a slew of harmful chemicals, most of which are known carcinogens (cancer causing). Known as in proven, not just a speculation that it may cause cancer. For one of my classes I had to write a report on this topic and let me tell you, I will never even touch some of these products ever again. Surprisingly enough Febreze was the worst of them all. Febreze was tested by the Environmental Working Group and was shown to release hundreds of toxic chemicals in just one spray. Hundreds!!! That one found its way into my trash really quickly. Next on my hit list were Clorox, Windex and Lysol products.
There are so many chemicals in so many products that it is impossible to list them all but at the bottom of the page I will add some links if you want to see what's hiding in your home and could be harming you. The sad part is that these products have many other serious consequences but are not regulated by law and not required to disclose their full list of ingredients. Risks include: hormone disruption, especially in women, asthma, allergies, skin irritation, respiratory irritation, multiple organ toxicity and most importantly, can cause cancer, specifically breast cancer in women.
So if you're a cleaning fanatic like me, there's still hope! You can find great natural brands that have entire lines of cleaning products including laundry detergent. The following brands and products are completely clean of harmful products, good for the environment and can be found at your local health food store, Whole Foods and at some grocery chains:
